Big Think. “How to pull yourself out of a cheap dopamine spiral | Mark Manson.” April 28, 2026. Video, 17:52. https://youtu.be/jfiBDuUVc-A.
Mark Manson is the writer of The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F.ck
Happiness =/ hedonism
Hedonism = seeking highs
Happiness = when you look back, you feel like your life was worth living
Adolescence = bargaining for social status and approval, seeing the world as transactional
Adulthood (happy adulthood) =
- “not giving a f.ck” about social status and approval
- focusing on the things that are “worth giving a f.ck” (that will make your life worth living upon looking back, that is worth not being liked for)
- being aware of the pains you are secretly happy to endure (either because it’s your weirdness, or because they come with the things that are worth giving a f.ck)
- stop seeing the world as transactional
- maintaining your virtues regardless of what you get back
Adulthood is anti-fragile
Related:
- my weirdness (pains I’m happy to endure) helps me to be a good administrator
- compare Aristotle’s 12 virtues with Franklin’s 13 virtues
- for leaving adolescence behind, see also that C.S. Lewis quote about childish things, which in an embellished way also says: stop giving a f.ck about what others think
