It’s an ongoing debate: is Zettelkasten an overcomplicated system? Do zettlers overcomplicate, overexplain, overanalyze, oversophisticate the system?
I think it might be just information overload. I wonder if it would be easier if we’d choose just one explanation, one good guide, one teacher, learn it, do it, and only tweak it when we have significant practice.

- Someone said it on the r/Zettelkasten subreddit that these systems (how to keep a commonplace book or a notecard collection) historically were taught by one mentor to his student(s). This is what we try to do on reddit, but if one wants to learn, one ends up listening to dozens of mentors and end up confused, instead of learning one practice, however imperfect and debatable the next person finds it to be.
- When we got into keeping pet parrots, we looked into multiple schools of thought. One trainer (Jamieleigh Womach of BirdTricks) said that there are so many different ways of doing it, that the best is to choose one trainer and stick with them. Don’t try to mix and match opposing ways, because you will confuse yourself and ultimately, your bird.
