I see similarities between “the fall of Murdaugh County” and the (hoped-for, as of 2025) fall of the FIDESZ / NER oligarchy in Hungary.

The Murdaugh Empire and it’s frauds and murders was torn down by a group of background employees (mostly women) who were underestimated by the “brotherhood” of powerful lawyers. The women were shushed but refused to step back, when they found irregularities in the books. They didn’t rest until the unraveled it all by doing their work diligently in the background.

In Hungary, the inside group of high-ranking politicians and their friends and family created a corrupt oligarchy, fed by taxpayer money, EU funds and corrupt business practices. The new party TISZA that emerged on the back of a huge political scandal, that caused the resignation of the President of the Republic and the Minister of Justice, has the goal for the 2026 elections to run with only “civilians not tainted by politics”. People who came from civilian backgrounds, from blue collar workers to teachers to small business owners.

  • As of the creation of this note (November 2025), we can only hope that during the 2026 elections, FIDESZ will loose and the NER oligarchy can be dissembled, or at least it won’t get a super majority, will face a close minority in the parliament for the next 4 years, and the NER oligarchy will also weaken.
  • As of the creation of this note (November 2025) we are in the process of electing local candidates. The party narrowed it down to 3 people per district. The political community (registered volunteers) will elect 2 of the 3. And by the end of November, the public will elect 1 of the 2 to run for parliament seats in 2026.
  • FIDESZ tried to attack Péter Magyar by mockingly calling him “cockerel”, both pointing at his height (petty) and trying to associate him with the aggression of a rooster. He run with it tho, since we have a tale, “The cockerel and his diamond coin”, that’s about a greedy Turkish Pasha stealing a diamond coin that a cockerel found in the trash and wanted to give it to his owner, a poor woman. (Turks had an oppressive regime over Hungary for 150 years.) The cockerel resisted, so the Turkish Pasha gave the order to kill him. But with the help of some magic, the cockerel didn’t just escape, but took revenge on the Pasha (filling his pants with wasps, mind you) and stole not just the one coin but all of the Pasha’s money. He gave all of it to his owner, who became a rich woman that way. A pretty good story to run with if the corrupt government you are fighting tries to mock you. :)
    • Another great character of Hungarian Politics fighting corruption is Ákos Hadházy. He was a lone soldier for years, traveling through the country, and documenting the “monuments of corruption” all over the country. In 2024 and 2025, his focus is mostly on the luxury clothing and accessory items of oligarchy wives (he posts price lists on his Facebook page, pointing out the fruits of corruption) and the iconic Hatvanpuszta estate. Hatvanpuszta is officially owned by the father of the Prime Minister, and officially it’s a “half finished farmstead”, but actually it’s a luxury estate with a country home complex, and exotic wild animals on the grounds. It really became the symbol of PM Orbán’s corruption.
  • Brené Brown points out that braveness and heroism isn’t the same thing. The tireless work of everyday people in the face of obstacles and sometimes even threats is bravery, not a passionate moment of heroism.
