Sarah Boone was found guilty in murder after her fiancé Jorge Torres dying in unusual circumstance in 2020.

One special element of the case was that Sarah Boone didn’t kill Jorge Torres with her own hands, but zipped him into a suitcase, intentionally left him there for a while, then she fell asleep drunk and unintentionally left him in the suitcase overnight, where he suffocated by the next morning when Sarah woke up.

It was hard to find the moment when the consensual drunken play became an intentional act.

  • The defence claimed Sarah was a battered spouse and acted out of self defence as the situation escalated, and this turned into negligence and an accidental death.

  • The state did everything to rule out self defence and negligence. After turning the battered spouse theory against Sarah, showing that if anyone, Jorge was the battered spouse in the situation, they used the analogy of the Force choke in Star Wars to explain how it was still an act of murderous intent.
