Probably the three most common ways to call God is God, Lord and Father.

In my native Hungarian, they are:

  • isten (god),
  • úr (lord), usually used in Christian texts as Uram, Urunk (my Lord, our Lord), and
  • atya, an older form of the modern apa (father), usually used in Christian texts as Mennyei Atyám, Mennyei Atyánk (my Heavenly Father, our Heavenly Father)

The origin of the word “isten” is lost. Might be kin to “is”, the ancient form of our word “ős”, meaning ancestor (non-gendered).

If I’d like to follow Harari’s advice on making a clear difference between the “god of the campfire” and the “god of the burning pyres” by using different words the two, I should make a habit of divorcing these two in my speech patterns:

  • the patriarchal Uram, Mennyei Atyám (my Lord, my Heavenly Father), and
  • isten, istenem (god, my god), the non-gendered word with mystical origins, akin to ancestors, something we come from

  • Ancient pagan Hungarians revered their ancestors. Every decent man had to be able to name their ancestors 7 generations back. The unnamed ancestors moulded together and became totems for the family and tribe. (Needs sourcing.)
    • I am not a decent woman by this standard. I can name only 3 generations of my female ancestral line: Rozália (nicknamed Lia), her mother Rozália (nicknamed Rózsi), and her mother, Anna.

      • Another reasoning for Mormon ancestor research, and also for family blogging and vlogging (source? KF?) is the sentiment that the Bible is the collected storues of one family (the bloodline of Jesus), the Book of Mormon is also a story of a family, and hence, writing down family history is religious practice. Who knows what future generations can gain if the story of a family is written down.
