Alternative histories are in a way like fan fiction.
Fan fiction takes a (fictional) work and reworks it. It changes some elements (some characters or their relationship, the focus of the story, the setting, etc.) and preserves others. But overall, it supposes a shared knowledge with the reader about the base world and story.
Alternate histories are the same, only the base world and story isn’t fictional but the one our timeline lived through.
